Tucked into the hills above Tinahely, The Dying Cow — known to generations as Tallon's — is about as traditional as an Irish pub gets. Run by the Dolan family for the best part of three centuries: folklore, open fires and regular trad sessions, with a welcome for walkers off the trail.

Hunter's Hotel

Newrath Bridge, Rathnew, Co. Wicklow · A67 TN30
Coaching inn (c.1720) Open-fire bar Riverside gardens Rooms Afternoon tea

Set in two acres of award-winning gardens on the Vartry, Hunter's is one of Ireland's oldest coaching inns — a beautifully intact early-18th-century house the same family has run for around two hundred years. The small open-fire bar and antique-filled rooms have changed little. A heritage stay rather than a session pub.

The Beach House (Dann's Bar)

Victoria Road, The Harbour, Greystones, Co. Wicklow · A63 H670

Down at Greystones harbour, The Beach House has poured pints since 1850, and its Dann's Bar is the real draw for old-Ireland character — a "spit-and-sawdust" room with a pot-belly stove, a Liscannor slate floor and a private snug. Friday nights bring live music, with a trad session through the week. Included on character grounds — it sits just below our usual rating threshold.

The TopIrishPubs standard

Why TopIrishPubs.ie is different

Irish pub directories are full of sponsored content and outdated listings. TopIrishPubs.ie is built on a different model.

🧑‍⚖️

Personal approval

Every single pub is personally reviewed and approved before it goes live. Not an algorithm. Not crowd-sourced. A person who's been to Ireland's best pubs and knows the difference.

📊

Data-first shortlisting

We start with Google Maps ratings — 4.3 stars minimum, based on at least 50 reviews. Then we apply editorial judgement, occasionally including a heritage pub on character. Nothing is ranked by an algorithm.

💸

No paid rankings

A pub cannot pay to appear at the top. Rankings are editorial — based on quality, atmosphere, food and drink, service and what makes a genuinely great Irish pub. Paid listings offer visibility, never priority.

🔄

Right to removal

Any pub that contacts us and asks to be removed is removed immediately, no questions asked. We're not here to scrape and publish data pubs haven't agreed to. Participation is always voluntary.

📍

Five-source verification

Every factual claim — name, address, Eircode, phone, food served — is verified against five independent sources before it goes in a profile. If two sources disagree, we flag it rather than guess.

🏴󠁩󠁥󠁿

County by county

We build one county at a time — thoroughly, not quickly. Wicklow first. When Wicklow is done properly, we move to Kerry, Cork, Dublin. Every county gets the same editorial standard.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

How are pubs chosen for TopIrishPubs.ie in Co. Wicklow?

We start with a data-first shortlist — a Google Maps rating of 4.3 stars or higher, based on at least 50 reviews — then verify every factual detail against five independent sources. Finally, every pub is personally reviewed and approved before it goes live. A small number of heritage pubs may be included on character even if they sit just below the rating threshold; where that happens, it's noted on the listing.

How do you verify the information on each pub?

Every factual claim — name, address, Eircode, phone, website and food offering — is checked against five independent sources, such as the pub's own website, Fáilte Ireland, Wicklow County Tourism, Google Maps and national press. If two sources disagree, we flag it rather than publish it.

Why do some profiles say "Pending Approval"?

Every profile is marked Pending Approval until it has been personally signed off and the pub has been given the chance to claim or decline its listing. Nothing is published as final without that step.

Can a pub pay to rank higher on TopIrishPubs.ie?

No. Rankings are editorial and cannot be bought. Paid Featured and Premium Partner listings offer extra visibility and features, but never affect editorial position. Any affiliate booking links earn us a commission at no cost to you, and do not influence placement.

How do I get my Wicklow pub listed or removed?

Email hello@topirishpubs.ie to claim, update or remove your profile. Any pub that asks to be removed is removed immediately, no questions asked. Participation is always voluntary.
